With the advent of shale gas exploitation, demands of LNG tanks for vehicles is increasing. However, insulation performance of current LNG tanks is limited due to the primitive structure of the tank. To solve this problem, this study presents an LNG tank with pillar-supported vacuum insulation structure and estimates its cryogenic insulation performance.
The proposed LNG tank is a double-shell vacuum insulation tank, which applies separate structure-supporting pillars in side section to reduce the heat transfer. The main heat transfer path of the pillar-supported LNG tank is divided into two: one through filler materials and the other through the pillars. The effective thermal conductivity of filler materials and that of pillars must be measured to predict the insulation performance of the pillar-supported LNG tank. The effective thermal conductivity of filler materials are measured in vacuum/cryogenic environment, from which a cryogenic insulation performance prediction model is suggested to predict the effective thermal conductivity at various temperatures. Also, multi-pass support (MPS) is introduced to enhance insulation performance of the pillar-supported LNG tank. The thermal conductivity of Nylon comprising MPS is measured at various temperatures. And the effective thermal conductivity of MPS is obtained numerically based on the measurement.
Based on the previously obtained effective thermal conductivity of filler materials and that of MPS, the cryogenic insulation performance of the pillar-supported LNG tank is estimated through a numerical analysis. In the case of analysis using the cryogenic insulation performance prediction model, a difference of 57.8 % exists in the heat input quantity compared to the case that the cryogenic insulation performance prediction model is not applied. In addition, the BOR (Boil-Off Rate) of the pillar-supported LNG tank is reduced by 63.5 % compared to the BOR of the current LNG tank.
