Although traditional perspective on innovation is that entire process is conducted within organizational boundaries of single firms, it is recently stressed the importance of acquiring external knowledge from the technological market for the innovation. With growing the active transaction of the technological market, this dissertation focus on dynamic patent environment surrounded the firms and its impacts on firms’ strategies. This dissertation consists of three studies in relation to major activities and key actors of the technology market. The first study, “The effects of licensing-in on innovative performance in different technological regimes” examines the effect of licensing-in on innovative performance of the firms and identifies the boundary conditions when this effect is greater in terms of the technological regime. The second study, “When do firms acquire external patents through the market transaction? A perspective on performance feedback” suggests search derived by performance feedback as one of the determinants of demand-side motivation to join the technology transaction market, drawing on the behavioral theory of the firm. A third study, “The impacts of patent litigation with NPE on firms’ patent strategy” attempts to analyze the effect of patent disputes with NPEs on the subsequent patenting activities from the perspective of the firms that are sued. These studies increase the better understanding of technology market and firms’ overall innovation activities.
과거에는 기업이 혁신을 달성하는 모든 과정이 기업 내부에서 이루어진다고 보았으나, 최근에는 기술 시장을 통해 특허 등의 기술을 거래함으로써 외부 지식을 유입하는 것의 중요성이 더욱 증대되고 있다. 본 학위논문은 이러한 기업을 둘러싼 역동적인 특허 환경에 집중하여 이것이 기업의 전략에 미치는 영향에 대하여 폭넓게 고찰하고 있다. 본 논문은 기술 시장과 관련된 주요 활동과 참여자들을 바탕으로 크게 세 가지 연구로 구성되어 있다. 첫번째 연구는 기업이 수요자로서 라이센싱을 하는 것이 혁신 성과에 어떠한 영향을 주는가와 관련된 것으로, 이에 기술체제에 따라 어떻게 다른 결과를 가져오는지를 밝히고 있다. 두번째 연구는 수요자의 입장으로서 기술시장의 특허 거래에 참여하게 되는 동기를 기업 행동 이론에 기반을 두고 살펴보고 있다. 마지막으로 세번째 연구는 기술 시장의 활발한 참여자 중 하나인 NPE에 집중하였다. 최근 주목받고 있는 특허 소송과 관련하여, NPE로부터 특허침해를 했다고 소송을 당하는 기업의 경우 향후 특허 전략에 어떠한 변화를 가져오게 되는지를 살펴보았다. 본 학위논문을 통해 기술 시장과 기업의 혁신활동과의 관계에 대한 이해를 한층 높이고, 향후 관련 분야의 더욱 활발한 추가 연구에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
