Open innovation is emerging as an important issue as the economic situation and consumer needs change dynamically. However, prior studies have examined the relationship between open innovation activities and innovation performance without distinguishing between incremental innovation and radical innovation which have completely different characteristics. Moreover, technology sourcing is considered to be one of the main factors affecting innovation performance, but it has been rarely studied in open innovation research. Therefore, I examined the relationship between open innovation activities and incremental and radical innovation. I found that external knowledge scanning, internal knowledge sharing and technology sourcing significantly and positively affect incremental innovation. Especially, the results showed that technology sourcing, unlike the other two factors, is the only positive and significant impact element to radical innovation.
오픈 이노베이션은 R&D 프로세스 내의 지식과 정보의 자유롭고 역동적인 흐름을 부각시킨 모델이다. 세계화로 인해 다양한 환경적·경제적 상황에서 경쟁을 해야 하고, 점점 짧아지는 제품의 주기에 대응해야 하는 주체들에게 역동성과 유연성을 강점으로 하는 오픈 이노베이션의 중요성은 점점 더 부각되고 있다. 그러나 이전의 많은 연구들은 서로 다른 특성을 갖고 있는 점진적 혁신과 급진적 혁신을 구별하지 않은 채로 오픈 이노베이션과의 관계를 살펴보았다. 그리고 외부 기술 도입은 오픈 이노베이션에서 중요한 역할을 하는 활동 중의 하나임에도 불구하고 외부 기술 도입과 혁신의 관계를 살펴본 연구는 부족하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 외부 지식 활용, 내부 지식 공유, 외부 기술 도입으로 구성된 오픈 이노베이션 활동이 점진적 혁신과 급진적 혁신 각각에 미치는 영향에 대해서 연구해보았다. 그 결과, 세 개의 오픈 이노베이션 활동은 점진적 혁신에 긍정적이고 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타난 반면, 급진적 혁신에서는 외부 기술 도입 활동만이 긍정적이고 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.
