Currently, major issues in automobile industry are the regulation of fuel efficiency and carbon dioxide emissions and the improvement of electric vehicle’s mileage range. Therefore, weight reduction of automotive parts is essential. Weight reduction leads to better fuel efficiency and higher competitiveness. To achieve effective weight reduction, it is necessary to introduce the design optimization process applicable to various automotive structures and materials, limited layout. In this study, we performed the systematic multi-objective design optimization process for an automotive front end structural component with short glass fiber reinforced composites considering light weight structure, anisotropic material property of composites, stiffness and strength of part, quality and production characteristics. Through the topology optimization, a basic design concept for size optimization was derived, and a metamodel was used to establish the objective functions and constraints functions. The pareto frontier, which has a contradictory relationship between the weight reduction effect, quality and production characteristics, was identified in the design area satisfying the constraints, and the optimal solution was selected effectively.
