Graphene and AgNW based electrode has high optical transparency, high mechanical elongation and high electrical conductivity. The flexible and transparent devices have been developed with the outstanding electrical, mechanical and optical properties of these nanomaterial. In order to commercialize the devices, analyzing the electro-mechanical behavior and failure mechanism under the mechanical or electrical loading is necessary to secure the performance reliability of the graphene or AgNW based devices.
Firstly, the failure mechanism of graphene on PET substrate under the tensile strain was observed. Using in-situ SEM (scanning electron microscopy), I found that the crack development trend could be divided by three stages (no crack, crack length increase, crack number increase) and each stage had a different the slope of normalized electrical resistance ($R/R_0$) curve.
Next, I observed the electrical-mechanical behavior of graphene on PET film under the cyclic loading. The electrical damage of graphene happened at the loading process at first cycle but the electrical resistance was decreased during the fatigue cycle of strain amplitude. I identified that the crack formed at loading process of 1st cycle was gradually closed and this makes the electrical resistance to recover. It seemed that the crack closure was due to the graphene strain relaxation caused by the PET strain redistribution and interfacial sliding between the PET film and graphene.
Lastly, the failure of AgNW under electrical current was investigated. Joule heating, which is generated by the electrical current, led to the discontinuity of AgNW. However, AgNW has a robustness under the electrical current after performing the atomic layer deposition of Al doped ZnO. Al doped ZnO, which covered AgNW, play a role in passivation layer for preventing oxidation and sulfuration. Through this method, AgNW showed stable behavior under the electrical current without the electrical resistance increase.
