Recently, electronics printing has received considerable attention as an alternative method for manufac-turing a wide range of electronic devices. Printed electronics could significantly reduce production costs and time and also save expensive materials through direct patterning. Printed features, however, can function as electron-ic parts if prepared with a much higher precision than the precision of conventional media printing processes. A variety of ongoing research efforts have attempted to improve the printing quality. The printing quality are in-fluenced by various printing conditions, such as printing methods, process parameters, designs of printed fea-tures and the properties of materials used on printing. In this paper, the effect of process parameters on pattern-ing conductive line patterns was studied. In chapter 2, conductive line patterns were printed on a poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate using a gravure printing method with conductive silver ink. A plate-to-roll gravure print was prepared for this experiment. Gravure plates with fine lines 5?25 μm in width and 0?90° in tilted angles were fabricated using photolithography techniques. The printability, defined as the ratio of the real printed area to the ideal printed area, was measured and analyzed with respect to the process parameters and the line pattern designs. The effect of the process parameters on the fine line patterning was discussed, including the wiping condition, the printing pressure and the printing speed. In chapter 3, the effect of micro and nanostructured surfaces on conductive line printing. The microstructured surface was prepared by MEMS fabri-cation technique on PDMS substrate, which had arrays of 10 μm regular PDMS cubes. The surface energy of the microstructured surfaces was determined by measuring the contact angle of a droplet of silver conductive ink. Screen printing methods were used in the conductive line printing experiment. Test line patterns with finely vary-ing widths (30?250 μm) were printed repeatedly, and the printability was statistically analyzed as a function of the linewidth and the gap distance of the microstructured surfaces. A nanostructured PDMS sample featuring a forest of 200 nm nanopillars was fabricated using a nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template. The densely-packed nano-pillars on the nanostructured surface acted like a lot of hairs on gekco’s foot, and showed high adhesion through the enhancement of van der Waals’ force on the surface. The contact angles of silver conductive ink on flat and nanostructured PDMS surface were measured to surface energy. The fine line pat-terns (5-10μm) printed onto the nanostructured PDMS were compared with those printed on a flat PDMS sub-strate.
