A node-to-node contact scheme, which is applicable to contact analyses involving large deformations, is developed with the aid of variable-node elements. The key issue is transforming non-matching meshes into matching meshes in a seamless manner. The present scheme guarantees that the patch test is passed and satisfaction of the nonpenetration condition, and hence it can provide smoother results with better convergence than the conventional node-to-surface or surface-to-surface contact scheme.
In two-dimensional contact analyses, the variable-node elements with Gauss integration are used for transforming non-matching meshes into matching meshes. The variable-node elements, in which nodes are added freely where they are needed, make it possible to transform the non-matching meshes into matching meshes directly. They thereby facilitate an efficient analysis, maintaining node-to-node contact during the contact deformation. The contact patch test, wherein the contact patch consists constructed out of variable-node elements, is thus passed, and iterations for equilibrium solutions reach convergence faster in this scheme than in the conventional approach based on the node-to-surface contact. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed scheme are demonstrated through several numerical examples of elasto-plastic contact analyses.
In three-dimensional contact analyses, the polyhedral elements, which are one kind of variable-node elements, with smoothed integration are used for transformations. Because polyhedral elements can have arbitrary numbers of polygonal faces and nodes, they can be used as transition elements for coupling nonmatching meshes. A strain smoothing technique in the cell-based smoothed finite element method is introduced to resolve critical difficulties in defining shape functions and in conducting numerical integration for the polyhedral elements, as well as to further enhance the accuracy and efficiency of the finite element analyses. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through several numerical examples with linear and nonlinear elastic deformations.
