The effect of impact on helical coil springs is studied by both analytical and experimental methods.
When a mass with a high velocity bits one end of spring which is fixed at the other end, the forces and velocities induced by the impact are different from those in the case of slow loading. The forces and velocities which are function of time and coil position are predicted analytically by the characteristic line method in the elastic region of springs.
In case of rigid contact between coils, the wave equation is not applicable, and the forces and velocities may be predicted by the Finite Difference Method.
