The bubble coalescence in foam was observed by photographic pictures. The time evolution of bubble size distribution in static foam was adequately explained by a model on coalescence which takes into account the interbubble gas diffusion. When the initial size distribution of bubbles were more uniform, the foams were more stable and the coalescence was less affected. Also the coalescence of rising bubbles in the foam column was observed by varying the residence time. The coalescence of rising bubbles was not adequately explained by the aforementioned model because of the residence time differences of bubbles in the column.
Experimental investigations on the removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solution were carried out through various foam separation techniques: foam fractionation, precipitate flotation, and adsorbing colloid flotation. Sodium lauryl sulfate(NLS) was used as collector. The precipitate and adsorbing colloid flotation techniques require less surfactant than the foam fractionation. In the foam fractionation, surfactant concentration should be well in excess of the stoichiometric amount because of the competition among ions for the surfactant molecules. The precipitate flotation and adsorbing colloid flotation techniques using $Fe(OH)_3$ and/or $Al(OH)_3$ as the adsorbing colloids were found to be useful for removing copper(II) from aqueous solution containing 50 ppm of copper(II). The residual copper(II) concentration could be reduced below 0.5 ppm with 30 minute treatment. The removal of copper(II) could be enhanced at lower pH by the adsorbing colloid flotation due to coprecipitation rather than by the precipitate flotation. The foreign ions inhibited the separation efficiency. The extent of inhibition by the divalent ions $Ca^{++}$ and $SO_4^{++}$ were found greater than that by the monovalent ions $Na^+$ and $NO_3^+$. It was suggested that Al(III) could be added as an activator to improve the removal efficiency especially when the sulfate ions inhibit the performance of the adsorbing colloid flotation with $Fe(OH)_3$.
