This paper empirically shows that firms in more concentrated industries earn lower stock returns. By examining the relationship between industry concentration and firm characteristics, I show that either barriers to entry in concentrated industries make firms safe from distress risk, or firms in more concentrated industries engage in less innovation risk. Therefore, firms in highly concentrated industries have lower expected returns.
Moreover, this paper reveals that the global financial crisis which broke out in late 2007 makes firms in more concentrated industries earn much lower stock returns. By using time-series regression analysis, during the global financial crisis, firms’ average stock returns in highly concentrated industries go lower compared to non-crisis periods.
