Pipeline communications is a communication technique using metallic pipeline as communication channel. Nowadays some companies and government are interested in pipeline communications and have studied this technique because our city possess the infrastructure based on many pipeline, such as, oil, gas pipeline, etc. However, there are few research papers dealing with metallic pipeline channel characteristic or channel model. So, we have studied metallic pipeline communication to confirm the possibility of communications. In order to apply to pipeline system models with any topology network, we have considered modularization of pipeline with unit length. We also have modeled the pipeline module to a 2-port network because cascading 2-port networks help us to derive the transfer function about any topology or any distance between Tx and Rx. In this paper, we have dealt with two copper straight pipes with different size, and two system models with different topology. To confirm how fast data can be sent in the pipeline channel, we have simulated BER (Bit Error Rate) performance with and without OFDM using MATLAB.
