Reformed liquid hydrocarbon fuels provide high energy densities for mobile power applications, such as solid-oxide fuel cells in auxiliary power units. However, numerous challenges exist in developing compact high-performance reformers. Mixture preparation prior to reaction on a reforming catalyst is certainly one im-portant challenge, as incomplete mixing with air can cause unacceptable temperature overshoots in the cata-lyst due to over-oxidation, and/or deleterious deposit formation. There is a high potential for ethylene pro-duction from gas-phase reactions in the mixing region: ethylene is known as a potential precursor. Ex-perimental and numerical studies on mixture preparation for hydrocarbon reforming have shown that the conditions in the mixing region play a critical role in the hydrocarbon reforming process. However, none of these studies provide a coherent explanation of the reported results. Consequently, a coupled transport-kinetics model was developed and simulated in this work to analyze the phenomena in the mixing region.
Isolated kinetics and fluid dynamics studies were conducted prior to performing the coupled transport-kinetics calculations in order to describe the separate phenomena. The isolated kinetic study provided essential information on the temperature and residence time operating window needed to suppress substantial ethylene production. A reaction mechanism for n-alkanes that was developed by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory was chosen. The fuel conversion and ethylene production rates are major concerns; thus, two parameters were used to quantify the ethylene production and the overall fuel conversion: the time required for 5% fuel consumption (\tau_5%) and the time required for the ethylene concentration to reach 0.1 mol% (\tau_t). The most important prediction was the unusual NTC behavior of hydrocarbon oxidation. The presence of the NTC region suggests that one way of minimizing undesirable gas-phase reactions is through mixing at relatively high temperatures (~550 \,^{\circ}\mathrc{C}C). Mixing at lower temperatures (400-500 \,^{\circ}\mathrc{C}C) or even higher temperatures (> 600 \,^{\circ}\mathrc{C}C) results in substantially more undesirable reactions, as predicted by the calculations. The predictions showed that the reactivity of a range of liquid alkanes was such that a substantial fraction of the reacted fuel could be converted to ethylene, a potential deposit precursor. The calculations also showed that under optimum reaction conditions, the time window for mixing was at best 100 ~ 200 ms.
An isolated fluid dynamics study was performed by developing a fluid flow model using commercial software. A converging-diverging nozzle was used in this work, being the simplest and most primitive mixing device available. A mixture of fuel and steam vapor was supplied in the axial direction while air was intro-duced through a side wall and added to the fuel-steam mixture before entering the nozzle. Turbulence was the most important characteristic of the fluid flow and was validated by measurements from acetone laser induced fluorescence experiments. From the turbulence models for steady-state analysis available in the literature, the most popular k-ε model and the most sophisticated Reynolds stress model were studied: both models suitably described turbulence under the given conditions, but the k-ε model required substantially less computation time and was consequently applied to the coupled transport-kinetics model. The selected mixer design was parameterized by three geometric parameters: the introduction length, the nozzle diameter, and the air injection angle. The mixing performance for each design was evaluated by the coefficient of variation of the surrogate fuel concentration at the catalyst entrance. The impact of each parameter was investigated, showing that the nozzle diameter had the most substantial impact. The most and least efficient designs were selected and applied to the coupled transport-kinetics calculations to observe the impact of mixing.
Finally, the coupled transport-kinetics calculations were performed for propane and n-heptane surro-gates. The results of the coupled simulations showed that propane apparently generated no ethylene due to its low reactivity in the gas-phase. However, n-heptane had a substantial potential to produce ethylene at low temperatures. There was valid ethylene yield in the temperature range below or above the NTC region, but the chemistry was different for each range. At low temperatures, peroxy chemistry is was dominant and ethylene is produced overall by fast and highly exothermic reactions. Because the reactions involved are fast, the low temperature regime was included in a limited mixing region at high Da. Efficient mixing with the air stream potentially stimulates reactions; thus, the impact of mixing was reflected in a decrease in the threshold resi-dence time. Therefore, mixing should be suppressed to prevent ethylene production in the low temperature region. In the temperature range above the NTC region, ethylene is primarily generated by alkyl radical decomposition. Therefore, an efficient mixing of reactants suppressed the reaction and the ethylene yield. The overall reactions are relatively slow; thus, the impact of mixing was negligible at high temperatures.
Although the impact of mixing is expected to produce variations in the fuel conversion and ethylene production, the coupled transport-kinetics calculations were dominated by the reaction kinetics. Therefore, the temperature and threshold residence time windows obtained from the isolated kinetics can serve as a quantita-tive guide for optimizing design operating conditions in the mixing region.
