We examine the issue of optimal technology level, pricing strategy and warranty period in a new product development process.
The technology level and price of new product have been considered as the important determinants of success or failure when firms introduce new products to the market. Moreover, as the competition intensifies in the global market, the product life cycle gets shortened and the customers become more concerned about the product’s entire life cycle rather than the purchase time.
Many previous literatures dealt with the relationship between the level of product technology and price, and also explored the impact of the warranty period on the demand of the product. However, there are few studies considering the relationship among these factors in a dynamic perspective with the product life cycle.
In this context, we try to answer to the following research questions. What should be the optimal technology level of product? How long should the firm guarantee for the product considering the product life cycle? What is the best pricing strategy incorporating the technology level and warranty period?
We develop two analytic models based on optimal control theory for the research questions. The first model handles the dynamics of optimal technology and price level of new product and the second model examines the optimal warranty period taking the price and product life cycle into account.
In the first model, we find out that the relationship between the optimal technology level and price changes according to the market structure. The optimal price increases as the technology level increases when the market is monopolistic. In contrast, the optimal price and technology level of the new product have a positive relationship in a duopoly market.
We explore the optimal warranty and pricing strategy under an EOL(End-of-Life) warranty policy in the second model, which describes a firm should provide warranty services even to discontinued products for a certain period of time. In addition we reveal that the optimal pricing is skimming strategy and the relationship between the optimal warranty period and length of product life cycle is convex.

전통적으로 제품의 기술 수준과 가격전략은 신제품의 성공과 실패를 결정하는 중요한 요인으로 인식되어 왔다.
또한 경쟁의 격화가 불러온 제품 수명 주기의 단축은 고객이 제품의 구매를 결정할 때
현재의 상황뿐만 아니라 제품의 수명주기와 그 이후의 보증까지 고려한 의사결정을 내리게 만들고 있다.
기존의 많은 연구들이 기술수준과 가격전략의 관계를 다루어 왔고,
보증기간이 수요에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구들도 다수 존재한다.
그러나 이러한 요인들의 관계를 제품수명주기를 고려하여 역동적, 통합적 관점에서 바라본 연구는 극히 드물다.
이러한 배경에서 우리는 다음과 같은 연구문제에 대한 해답을 찾고자 하였다.
신제품 개발에 있어 최적의 기술 전략은 무엇인가?
제품 수명 주기를 고려할 때 최적의 보증전략은 무엇인가?
기술과 보증기간, 제품수명주기를 고려한 최적의 가격 전략은 무엇인가?
이 연구 문제들에 대한 해답을 얻기 위해 최적통제이론을 사용한 두 개의 수리적 모형을 개발하였다.
첫 번째는 신제품 개발과정에서 최적의 기술수준과 가격수준의 관계에 대한 모형이고
두 번째는 가격과 제품수명 주기를 고려한 최적 보증기간에 대한 모형이다.
첫 번째 모형에서 우리는 시장의 구조에 따라 최적 기술 수준과 가격과의 관계가 달라짐을 알 수 있었다.
즉, 독점시장의 경우 기술 수준이 높아질수록 최적의 제품 가격은 오히려 하락하는 구간이 존재하는 반면
과점시장에서는 기술 수준에 따라 제품 가격이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다.
두 번째 모형은 EOL 서비스가 존재할 때, 즉 제품 수명 주기가 끝난 후에도 일정기간 기업이
그 제품에 대한 보증 서비스를 제공해야 할 때의 최적 보증 전략에 대해 다루고 있다.
이 모형을 통해 우리는 이 상황에서 최적의 가격전략은 걷어내기 전략이며
제품의 보증기간과 수명주기의 관계는 convex함을 알 수 있었다.
