This study investigates the financial statement impact of adopting IFRS using a unique sample of Korean firms who have early adopted IFRS during 2009 through 2010 before the mandatory adoption year of 2011. The results in this study indicate that there are significant impact for assets, liabilities, equity and net income figures. Most notably, land revaluation, deemed cost, consolidation and depreciation (depreciation, goodwill, investment, and consolidation) are the financial statement items that affect book value of equity (net income) causing a deviation of Korean-GAAP (K-GAAP) from IFRS. Additionally, book values under IFRS have incremental value relevance while net income figures under K-GAAP have higher value relevance. Considering that K-GAAP resembles the U.S. GAAP in many instances, some implications for IFRS adoption in the U.S. are provided.
