In recent decades, many companies have widely and deeply adopted the concept of open innovation from the private sector into the public sector in order to gain a competitive advantage from the crowd. In particular, the independent communities for open innovation such as the Linux kernel developer community are emerging as an alternative form of organization in the age of social business in which participation, resource sharing and knowledge collaboration are indispensible for the value creation. Regarding these business circumstance, the main purpose of this dissertation is to investigate motivation and performance of Wikipedia, a prominent example of community-based open innovation by raising the following research questions: (1) Why do people participate in Wikipedia? (2) What factors make the difference in the performance of the collaborative work in Wikipedia? (3) What factors affect the success of Wikipedia? With regards to these questions, this dissertation found some critical outcomes. First, an individual’s intention to contribute to Wikipedia articles conventionally depends on private benefits (e.g., enjoyment and social value) and costs. Their intention is also influenced by collective benefits such as the expected value of the collective work done by the crowd, and the expected value of their individual contribution as well. Second, this dissertation indicates that the performance of collaborative work is mainly determined by the size of the group of contributors, and thus the relationship between group size and group performance in Wikipedia is moderated by the interaction process among group members. Additionally, the group size is affected by how many resources such as scholarly references or news articles on the topic of the article have been published. Third, it can be argued that the difference of the success among the Wikipedia editions can be quantitatively compared by evaluating the quality of the featured articles (i.e., a set of the best articles in each Wikipedia edition). The self-regulating norms directly and indirectly through quality management affect Wikipedia success. In turn, the community size is directly related to the community norms. Therefore, it can be recommended that the independent and open innovation communities have to promote the individual’s participation by maximally appealing to both the collective values and private benefits and by effectively reducing the negative effect of the contribution costs. Open innovation communities also enable their members to participate in as diverse group works as they can do, and offer the accessibility to sufficient resources. In a nutshell, the individual members not only pay attention to striving to devise decent norms for the community, but also utilizing the quality of control process.
본 논문은 개방형 혁신 중 온라인 커뮤티니에 의해 주도되는 방식의 개방형 혁신을 다루고 있다. 본 논문에서는 온라인 커뮤니티를 통한 개방형 혁신에 참여하는 동기와 협업의 품질, 그리고 온라인 커뮤니티의 성패에 미치는 요인을 분석한 독립된 세 개의 연구로 구성되어 있다.
본 논문의 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 개방형 혁신을 위한 온라인 커뮤니티에 참여하는 것은 개인에게 주어지는 유인요인 (심리적 보상, 사회적 보상 등)뿐만 아니라 혁신을 통해 집단이 얻게 될 집합적 유인요인에 의해서도 영향을 받는다. 또, 온라인 커뮤니티의 특성상, 동료 기여자들로부터 받게 될 평판은 사회적인 유인요인이기에 앞서 사회적인 관계에 의한 영향으로 해석될 수 있다. 또 참여할 때 ??어지게 될 부담에 대해서는 혁신에 참여하는 것에 대한 판단에 앞서 바로 참여 의도에 영향을 주는 점으로 볼 때, 제약 요인으로 판단될 수 있다.
둘째, 온라인 커뮤니티에서의 개방형 혁신의 협업 품질은 혁신 활동에 참여하는 참가자 수에 비례한다. 그런데 그 비례 관계는 참여자들간의 의사소통, 즉 토론의 정도에 의해 조정받는다. 그리고 여러 협업 중 특정 협업에 기여하는 참가자 수는 협업 대상의 특성에 의해 좌우된다. 위키피디아의 경우, 문서의 특징 중 참고할 지식 (학술 자료, 뉴스 기사 등)의 양에 의해 직접적으로 영향을 받고, 이것은 궁극적으로 협업 품질에 영향을 준다.
셋째, 개방형 혁신을 위한 온라인 커뮤티니는 커뮤니티 멤버들이 협의해서 만들어진 방침에 의해 그 성패가 좌우된다. 위키피디아의 목적 중 하나인 교육용 참고자료서의 가치는 위키피디아의 각 커뮤티니이 자발적으로 마련한 방침의 수준에 따라 차이가 난다. 그런데 그 방침은 커뮤니티 활동의 결과에 직접적으로 영향을 주는 것 뿐만 아니라 토론을 통한 의견교환과 템플레이트를 통한 직접 조정하는 것과 같은 간접적인 방식으로 영향을 준다. 마지막으로, 위키피디아 커뮤니티의 원칙은 커뮤니티의 크기에 의해 영향을 받는다. 따라서, 개방형 혁신 커뮤니티의 성패는 일반인의 참여와 협업, 방침에 의해 좌우된다.
