The self-assembly of nano-building blocks using a bottom-up approach toward conceptual architectures has been proposed to control their direct structures at a nanometer length scale and their collective optical and electronic properties. In this thesis, various nanostructured materials were synthesized and self-assembled using amphiphilic self-assembling systems. 0-dimensional objects, gold nanocrystals and CdSe/ZnS quantum dots, and 2-dimensional objects, metal oxide nanosheets, were used as nano-building blocks. Using them, various discrete superstructures of nanoparticles and lamellar mesostructures of nanosheets were fabricated as conceptual architectures.
In chapter 2, the novel fabrication and aqueous self-assembly of amphiphilic nanocrystallo-polymers were presented. Hydrophobic nanocrystals are used as the hydrophobic component of amphiphiles, and they can drive the hydrophobic interaction-mediated direct self-assembly to create various nanostructures, such as spherical aggregates, core-shell unimolecular micelles, and cylinders. The nanocrystals can be uniformly arranged in the core of the nanostructures. We further show that the amphiphilic nanocrystallo-polymers have dynamic self-assembling and surface-active properties.
In chapter 3, self-assembly of QDs into highly organized discrete sphere-shaped aggregates and their optical interactions were studied. The amphiphilic QD-conjugated polymers formed micelle-like aggregates. The inter-QD distance and the fluorescence self-quenching of the aggregated QDs were controlled by swelling the core of the self-aggregates. The optical interactions indicate the surface-active property and dynamic self-assembling property of the QD-grafted polymers.
In chapter 4, a facile and large-scale synthesis of 2-dimensional metal oxide nanosheets and their self-assembling properties were described. Using the surfactant lamellar mesophases, metal oxide nanosheets such as copper oxide and zinc oxide nanosheets were fabricated. On a multi-gram scale, single crystalline metal oxide nanosheets were conveniently synthesized under ambient conditions without special equipments. The fabricated nanosheets show the reversible self-assembling and disassembling properties. Using the nanosheets and surfactants as basic building blocks, highly ordered lamellar mesostructures were reassembled on the substrate. To study the catalytic activity of the CuO nanosheets, the reduction of 4-NP by NaBH4 was used as a model reaction. The CuO nanosheets in NaBH4 solution showed in situ catalytic activity with a zero-order kinetics.
