Aesthetic judgment is a kind of value-based decisions in which an organism’s choice is not mandated by the immediate sensory characteristics of stimuli, but rather by the subjective aesthetic experience and preference of the individual. Although aesthetic judgment significantly influences future behavior and subsequent consumption, especially of the cultural goods, there exists no unambiguously correct answer in value-based decisions. Moreover, the qualification of its impacts and modulation by unseen factors has been hard to investigate from a scientific perspective. By adopting the recent neuroimaging technique, in the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we presented the visual artworks to the participants and monitored their brain activity. Here we demonstrated the neural correlates of aesthetic judgment and its modulation by internal factors of the appreciators. Unlike previous neuroaesthetics studies that have been revealed simple perception based preference, we measured how the knowledge, the exhibition context, the social influences or the ability related to discern specific style comes into play modulating the aesthetic judgment of the identical artwork. Our behavioral results showed that the changes in aesthetic judgment are modulated according to the degree of agreement with the background information or judgments to artworks from social reference groups, the level of contextual congruency to the components in the artwork, and the ability to recognize artistic style. Furthermore the brain area where its activity was correlated with the changes in aesthetic judgment suggests that the interaction between the top-down attention process and affective value processing significantly influence the changes in aesthetic judgment. The activities of middle orbito-frontal cortex (mOFC) and the rostral anterior cingulate cortex (rACC) were associated with the individual aesthetic judgments and significantly modulated by the influences of factors. Our results suggest that the collected value by sensory-motor contingencies and emotional and self-rewarding motivations are integrated into the prefrontal brain areas, and its activity guides the value based judgment of artworks.
예술품의 미적 가치 판단은 작품의 인지 가능한 물리적 속성을 바탕으로 감상자 개개인이 작품을 감상하는 동안 어떠한 미적 경험을 하였는지에 따라 결정된다. 미적 가치 판단은 비단 미술품에 국한된 것이 아니며 일상의 사회적 판단및 구매 결정에도 크게 영향을 미친다. 특히 문화 상품에 대한 소비자의 미적 판단은 선택과 소비에 중요한 역할을 한다. 예술 감상이라는 복잡한 인지과정을 이해하기 위해 감상자의 예술작품을 감상과 이에 따른 미적 판단을 내리는 과정에 대한 이론적 모델이 제시 되어왔지만 이러한 가치에 근거한 판단이 어떻게 이루어지는지에 대한 실험적인 검증은 기존 연구 방법의 한계상 이루어지기 어려웠다. 특히 경험적으로 작품의 물리적 요소 외에 미적 판단에 영향을 미치는 것으로 알려진 작품 외적 요소가 미적 판단 변화에 미치는 영향은 정량화 하여 측정되지 못하였다. 본 연구는 뇌영상 이미지 기법 중 자기공명장치 (fMRI) 를 이용하여 감상자의 대뇌 활동을 측정하여 인지적, 맥락적, 사회적 요소가 어떻게 감상자의 두뇌에서 처리되고 나아가 미적 판단을 변화시키는가를 연구하고자 한다. 이를 위해 첫째로 일반 감상자가 추상회화 작품과 관련된 지식을 습득하면서 변화하는 미적 판단, 둘째로 감정적으로 일관된 주제를 가지고 앞서 제시되는 전시 맥락이 같은 작품에 대한 미적 판단을 어떻게 변화시키는가, 셋째로 일정 학습을 통해 예술가 고유의 스타일을 알아보게 되는 능력이 새로운 작품을 감상하는데 어떠한 영향을 미치는가, 마지막으로 사회적으로 다양한 참고 그룹의 미적 판단이 개인의 미적 판단에 미치는 영향을 행동적으로 밝히고 이와 유의미하게 관련을 보이며 활성화 되는 신경기저를 밝혀냈다. 본 연구의 결과는 제시되는 정보에 따라 감상자가 피상적인 미적 판단을 넘어선 미적 감상을 하게 됨을 보였다. 또한 이러한 작품 외적 요소의 영향이 정량화 되어 모델로 이해될 수 있는 가능성을 제시하며, 미적 판단 변화의 인지적 동기가 무엇인지 밝히고자 하였다. 나아가 지금까지의 개별 작품의 미적 판단의 원인을 이해하려는 노력과 병행하여 감상자의 미적판단의 심리적 원인이 무엇인지 이해하려는 연구가 중요함을 신경과학적 근거를 통해 보이고자 한다.
