Synchronized oscillations in the human brain are closely related to both cognitive functions and pathological brain states, but the underlying mechanisms of them need to be elucidated. In this research, we examined the relationship between feedback connections and synchronization in the brain. At first, we measured synchrony between simulated neural networks consisted of two or ten different neural groups. Two neural groups could generate synchronized oscillations only when there were inter-regional feedback connections. Moreover, feedback relationships in multi-group networks were advantageous to their synchronization. We also investigated synchrony values and underlying feedback relationships between brain areas by analyzing EEG data of a patient with epilepsy. It turned out that the overall phase synchronies in the gamma band were correlated with the number of inter-regional feedback connections. Taken together, we conclude that the feedback connections in the brain might play an important role in synchronized oscillations.
