Thermal properties of soils are frequently required for geotechnical engineering design problems. More spe-cifically, they play important roles in design of ground heat exchangers(GHEs), energy pile, road including underground pipe lines or cables, nuclear waste disposal facility, and decision of frozen depth. Among several soil thermal properties, ground thermal conductivity is the most important property as it controls the heat flow behavior. Moreover, it is necessary to measure the ground thermal conductivity over more spacious area continuously for a large scale geotechnical structure.
Therefore, this research investigates the applicability of optical fiber sensors for measurement of ground thermal conductivity since they exhibit good results for a monitoring system applied to the geotechnical struc-tures. An equipment for thermal response test(TRT) was developed, and it basically uses optical fiber sensors. New Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) sensors as well as Resistance Temperature Detector(RTD) sensors were adopted to measure the ground thermal conductivity of soil filled in a steel box. TRTs using both U-type and spiral coil type GHEs were conducted. Ground thermal conductivity of a soil obtained from TRTs using U-type GHE was consistent with the thermal conductivity evaluated by original line source model with time, and by heat flow method using the similar properties of soil. Ground thermal conductivity from TRT using spiral coil type GHE was about two and half bigger than that of U-type GHE. Another TRT considering soil layers composed of sand and clay was conducted. Gound thermal conductivity was 10% smaller than that of single layer.
It can be concluded that the TRT equipment embedding FBG sensors can be well applied for thermal re-sponse tests. There is also surely difference of ground thermal conductivity between single layer and multi layers. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the non homogeneous soil condition in measuring the ground thermal conductivity. The testing equipment developed in this study is more applicable to measure thermal properties of soils in spacious area continuously, especially in measuring an equivalent ground thermal con-ductivity considering multi-layer of soils.
개발된 열응답 시험기는 기존의 RTD(Resistance Temperature Detector) 온도 센서 외에 광섬유 센서의 한 종류인 FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating) 센서도 실시간적으로 측정할 수 있는 시스템으로 구성되어 있다.
