High flexibility in the remote-control of movements of small objects including single molecule, neutral nano-scaled particles, and polymeric chains can open up further advance in many material sciences and biochemical or biophysical applications. In this thesis, I seek to exploit interesting and fascinating characteristics of ‘photoinduced molecular motions’, in particular directional photofluidization of photochromic polymer (azobenzene polymer abbreviated as azopolymer), for bringing solution to the fabrication of micro/nanostructures that could revolutionize nanophotonics (i.e., diffractive optical elements and plasmonics).
A main challenge in the development of micro/nanolithography is to overcome the resolution limit of established method and to increase the flexibility in the control of features’s shapes and geometries. Although many of promising techniques have been proposed over the last decades, we still face a limited control of structural features and resolution. In a clever method using photo-reconfigurable polymer (azopolymer) arrays instead of a conventional photocrosslinked resist or thermoplastic polymer array, it makes it easy to manipulate the structural features of polymeric micro/nanoarchitecture in an unprecedented way by varying the light irradiation time and the electric vector of the light. In particulary, I demonstrated the unmatched ability of directionoal photofluidization lithography (DPL) to the control of structural complexity (i.e., randomness) of periodic nanotexture (Chapter 2-4) and feature sizes (sub-30-nm) which are nearly impossible to be accomplished by any established micro/nanofabrications (Chapter 5). Furthermore, I showed that this azopolymer arrays can be used as a robust template for pattern transfer. As proof-of-concept for pattern transfer using azopolymer template, I successfully created various metallic nanostructures including nanowire, nanoellipsoid, and funnel-shaped nanotip arrays by pattern transfer of photo-reconfigured polymer arrays (Chapter 6-7). It is also noteworthy that this DPL ensures a scalable and parallel way that is highly compatible to device fabrication process. All of these materials associated with DPL could provide a promising way for the fabrication of various micro/nanostructural motifs with finely tuned structural features in a scalable and deterministic way, once again beating the current limitations of established micro/nanofabrication techniques and nanophotonics.
