In this thesis, we propose a system for extracting a dynamic foreground object, exploiting pre-computed background information. For this purpose, we formulate a graph cut-based energy minimization problem and also provide some refinement techniques. Our system consists of three steps : initial segmentation, local refinement, and interactive adjustment. First, we initially estimate the shape of a dynamic foreground object, using a graph cut technique. We build an energy function in terms of the color difference of each pair of neighboring pixels and the difference image between the original and background images. Next, we refine the foreground object boundary using optical flow. In this step, the system detects the background pixels that may be misclassified into the foreground object and optimizes the energy function for recomputing the object boundary. The system provides two kinds of user interfaces, foreground brush and background brush. With the information manually specified for each user interface, the system refines the object boundary for a window of consecutive frames at each frame automatically. Finally, our system allows the user to directly adjust the object boundary as post-processing.
