With growing interests on physical computing, tangible user interface and interactive media arts, many designers from traditional design disciplines are contributing to these new fields. They create new concepts of interactive products, applications and artworks with their own specialties based on the understandings of users, technologies and aesthetics. One of the problems they face in such projects, nevertheless, is the difficulty of transforming their conceptual ideas into initial working outcomes. Multimedia authoring tools have been used but limited in bridging concepts and technical implementing skills, and some prototyping tools have been used but not efficient as designers are unfamiliar to low level engineering details.
This paper describes MIDAS (Media Interaction Design Authoring System), an authoring toolkit for designers with non-technical backgrounds to easily implement a wide range of applications for new interaction design projects. It provides easier ways to manage external input and output elements and to support Augmented Reality with vision processing functionalities within a generally used multimedia design environment, MIDAS consists of several PC interface boards and software modules. Users can control external electric devices, such as sensors, motors and other control units through simple configurations with a PC and the interface boards. Users can also simply make 3D Augmented Reality applications using general USB cameras and printed marker images. Programming demands are minimized for using all these features.
MIDAS has been used in design education for 3 years and by voluntary designers to evaluate the usefulness, Many design projects were successfully accomplished using MIDAS. Designers participated in the projects reported that MIDAS was not only helpful as they could concentrate more on ideation but also very easy to use as they implemented the physical interface concepts without advanced engineering skills. The prototyping time was also reduced.
