In this thesis, experimental studies on the field-responsive fluids were performed in terms of the development of novel materials and characterization of the rheological properties. The field-responsive fluids are representative smart materials having electric or magnetic field-dependent properties induced by the patterned structures in the external field. Among them, electrorheological (ER) and magnetorheological (MR) fluids can offer a potential applicability in development of a novel device as a fast, reversible mechanical-electrical interface. However, the performance of ER and MR fluids should be further improved along with the fundamental understanding of related mechanisms. Therefore, major objective of this thesis is placed in the understanding of the relation between the material properties and microscopic/rheological behavior of these fluids.
As a novel ER material for the high temperature application, semiconductive polymeric particle suspension is prepared. In order to investigate the effects of the electrical properties of polymeric particles on the ER phenomena, conductivity of semiconductive poly(p-phenylene) particle is controlled. The dielectric behaviors of ER suspension revealed facilitated interfacial polarization for the suspension with intermediate conductivity of particle. These behaviors were closely related with the magnitude of dynamic yield stress, which showed a maximum and then decreased with increasing the conductivity of particles. Therefore, we established an optimum condition of particle conductivity showing the maximum ER activity.
In order to promote the ER effect considerably, a novel multiphase dispersion system has been designed and investigated. Here the dispersed emulsion drop is introduced to the polyaniline particle suspension with optimum conductivity. The electrical conductivity of emulsion drop (Celeclor s45) was $10^2$ times higher than that of medium (silicone oil), so that this emulsion itself showed ER activity. Only when the dispersed drops with a higher conductivity formed the dispersed liquid phases in the presence of dispersed polyaniline particles, a synergistic effect in the magnitude of yield stress was observed, giving a better ER performance and reduced current density. A direct observation of microscopic change demonstrated that such synergistic effect is due to the unique microstructures in a complex composed of particles and deformed emulsion drops. Not only the magnitude but also the dependence on the electric field strength of yield stresses was strongly affected by the change in relative composition of particulate and liquid drop phases. The associated mechanism in particle-drop bi-dispersion was explained on the basis of the relationship between the microscopic change of structures and macroscopic rheological properties.
Investigation on the dynamic rheological behavior of ER fluids containing emulsion drops, dispersed particles, and particle-drop bi-dispersed phases were also performed in the oscillatory shear flow. For the polyaniline ER suspensions, torque waveforms subjected to sinusoidal strain input showed deviation even at the small strain about 5.0%, indicating the transition from viscoelastic to viscoplastic (yielding) behaviors. Within the region of viscoelasticity, the linear region is restricted below the amplitude of 0.1%, whereas the ER-active emulsions showed rather wide linear regime. Increase of the electric field strength and the volume fraction of emulsion drops (φ) enlarged the range of viscoelasticity and delayed the onset of yielding. Frequency dependence of the storage shear modulus in the linear viscoelastic region revealed the plateau value, which is the typical feature of the elastic solid. Subjected to strain with large amplitude, ER material cannot be treated as a viscoelastic body.
For the improvement of the dispersion stability for ER suspensions based on semi-conductive polymers, polyaniline stabilized by poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) was prepared. In the presence of PVME, one can easily obtain the stable aqueous colloidal dispersions of the polyaniline. However, stable suspension of polyaniline in silicone oil can be obtained only at the low concentration of the PVME (0.75%), although the average particle size of the isolated-redispersed particles is generally reduced with the amount of PVME stabilizer. In the PVME-rich condition, morphological evolution and the formation of highly packed particle aggregates was investigated by the SEM image. The maximum dynamic yield stress for the well-stabilized polyaniline suspension (0.75% PVME stabilizer) is consistent with the change of the zero-field apparent viscosity for the materials with equal weight fraction, representing the different state of dispersions.
The magnetorheological (MR) fluid can be effective counterpart of ER fluid for the area of application requiring higher mechanical strength. Magnetic and rheological properties of MR suspension can be systematically investigated by utilizing the analogy between ER and MR phenomena. The yield stress ($τ_y$) was observed to vary as $H_0\face^(3/2)$, indicating that local magnetization saturation occurs between the neighboring particles. Only in the low concentration of particles, $τ_y$ depends on the volume fraction of the particles (φ). Rheological behaviors of MR fluids subjected to a small-strain oscillatory shear flow were investigated as a function of the strain amplitude, frequency, and the external magnetic field. In order to improve the stability of carbonyl iron-based MR fluid, ferromagnetic $Co-γ-Fe_2O_3$ and $CrO_2$ particles were incorporated as stabilizing and thickening additives. The needle-like ferromagnetic particles seem to play a role of steric repulsion between the relatively large carbonyl iron particles, resulting in the improved stability against the rapid sedimentation of dense iron particles. Furthermore, the yield stresses of the additive-containing MR suspensions increased in the application of strong magnetic field strength.'
