Poly[(methylsilylene)ethynylene] (1) and poly[(methylsilylene)-2,5-thiophenylene] (2) were prepared in good yields. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry indicated the Si-H group to increase the pyrolysis residue yields. Gelation was achieved from polymer 1 by introduction of crosslinking sites using platinum catalyzed hydrosilylation with aromatic diethynyl compounds. It was also possible to cause gelation from polymer 1 without additional crosslinking agent. The results indicate that polymers 1 and 2 are very useful for the ceramic purpose.
Polymerization of 2-, 3-, and 4-(dimethylsilyl)phenylacetylene by chloroplatinic acid-catalyzed hydrosilylation gave the corresponding poly(dimethylsilylene-phenylenevinylene)s (3a-3c). Remarkable dependence of monomer reactivity upon substituent position was observed. Fluorescence studies revealed that the polymers emit in blue or violet color region. 3a showed very different behavior from 3b and 3c in TGA experiments reflecting the structure-property relationships. 3c could be successfully turned into black and smooth ceramic fiber from its melt by pyrolysis.
Poly(silylenevinylene(bi)phenylenevinylene)s (4a-5b) were synthesized by chloroplatinic acid-catalyzed hydrosilylation polymerization between α,ω-diethynylarenes and methylphenylsilane or diphenylsilane. Polymer structure was dependent on the substituent size of the silane reagent. Increased β-selectivity was observed in the polymerization due to the bulky phenyl substituent on the Si atom. Poly(silylenevinylenephenylenevinylene)s showed fluorescence emission in the blue region. 4a-5b were thermally stable up to 250℃ and gave high residue yield of 63-71% at 800℃. It was possible to pull very long flexible fibers from the melts of polymer 5a or 5b and turn them into ceramic fibers by pyrolysis.
Pyridine catalyzed reactions of methyldichlorosilane with bis(trimethylsilyl)-carbodiimide afforded the first dichlorosilane-derived anhydrous sol-gel material. Both trimethylchlorosilane formation and Si-H disproportionation act as crosslinking mechanisms. The dried gels form amorphous or crystalline materials depending on the sample history. The xerogels gave Si/C/N ceramics when pyrolyzed at 1200℃ which makes it an ideal precusor for pure silicon carbide.
