The emerging portable battery-operated system demands compact, high efficiency, low-voltage and low-power DC-DC converters to maximize battery life time. The purpose of this paper is to study optimizing design for low-voltage DC-DC converter using CMOS switch and micro-fabricated inductor. In CMOS switch environment, a dominant loss component is not switching loss but conduction loss at 1~2MHz switching frequency. To effectively raise efficiency, the conduction loss must be reduced. In this paper, therefore a constant frequency PWM converter with synchronous rectifier is used. To minimize total loss, an optimized design is required for selecting switch size and switching frequency. The silicon area and power consumption of the gate-drive buffers are reduced with a tapering factor that minimizes technology and application. The designed DC-DC converter delivers 1W~2W at 3V from a 3.5~5V battery. The operation of DC-DC converter and controller is verified by HSPICE simulation using 0.8u CMOS process model.
