This study examines the effect of tick size through regression discontinuity around discontinuity prices, prices where tick size is different above and below. The result shows spread, depth, and effective spread decrease as tick size decreases, similarly as previous studies have shown. Utilizing unique Korea Stock Exchange(KSE) tick size policy with different tick size jump around discontinuity prices, this study shows tick size effect increases as difference in tick size increases. Also, heterogeneous effect of tick size on volume around different discontinuity prices is found. Possible behavioral reason lying behind it is tested by how much portion of a firm’s stocks is traded by retail investors. In addition, the larger optimal tick size with greater risk-aversion among investors is empirically tested.
