Smartphones have become an essential device in our daily life, and consumers use numerous types of apps. Among various apps, there are very few users who have never used pre-installed apps provided by default on smartphones, and its usage also accounts for a significant portion. However, previous research on the attention of these pre-installed apps has been limited and has been mainly addressed on the negative aspects. In this study, based on the streaming data of mobile apps for each user, we analyze the spillover effects of mobile device manufacturer's pre-installed apps usage on similar download (i.e., third-party) apps usage that have similar functions or belong to the same category. Furthermore, we observe how the effects differ according to the demographic characteristics of the users as well as the app categories, and provide interesting results for each case. As a result of the main analysis, overall, we found that there are positive spillover effects of pre-installed apps usage on similar third-party apps usage. This study provides major implications for revealing that pre-installed apps contribute to expanding the entire app ecosystem, including similar third-party apps.
스마트폰이 일상 생활의 필수기기로 자리 잡으며 소비자들은 수많은 앱을 사용하고 있다. 다양한 앱 중 스마트폰에 기본적으로 제공되는 선탑재 앱을 한번도 사용해보지 않은 사용자는 극히 드물며 사용량 또한 상당한 비중을 차지한다. 그러나 이러한 선탑재 앱에 대한 연구는 제한적이었으며 주로 부정적인 측면에서 다뤄졌다. 본 연구에서는 유저별 모바일 앱 스트리밍 데이터를 바탕으로 제조사 선탑재 앱 사용이, 비슷한 기능을 지닌 혹은 동일한 카테고리에 속하는 다운로드 앱 (즉, 앱 마켓에서 다운로드 받는 서드파티 앱) 사용 패턴에 미치는 스필오버 효과를 분석한다. 나아가, 모바일 앱 카테고리별 스필오버 효과 분석을 비롯해 유저의 인구통계학적 특성에 따라 그 효과가 어떻게 다른 지 또한 관찰하며 각각의 경우에 대한 흥미로운 결과를 제공한다. 주요 분석 결과, 전반적으로 선탑재 앱 사용이 비슷한 다운로드 앱(서드파티 앱) 사용에 긍정적인 스필오버를 일으켰다. 본 연구는 선탑재 앱이 다운로드 앱(서드파티 앱)을 포함한 전반적인 앱 생태계 확장에 기여한다는 점을 밝힌 주요한 함의를 제공한다.
