Since the outbreak of COVID-19, there has been a major change in existing offline-oriented consumption patterns. This study examines how COVID-19 affected consumers' Shopping Time Habits (STH) at the offline retailer. To do this, we use a novel panel dataset of the detailed purchase information collected from a large domestic discount retailer in South Korea, and we apply a difference-in-differences method to distinguish the change in STH across consumers. We first find that, after COVID-19 emerged, a larger proportion of purchases occurred during the daytime, on average. However, more interestingly, there are noticeable differences by age group and distance from home to store. In this context, we propose that the STH changes after COVID-19 can generally be classified into four types ( i) unchanged, ii) shift, iii) new formation, and iv) disappearance). Our subsequent analyses show that consumers yield different purchase behaviors according to the types. Specifically, while consumers in the "shift" type increased their purchases, consumers in other types tend to reduce their purchases at the offline retailer. Our study provides substantial theoretical and practical implications by emphasizing the importance of looking at the changes in consumers' STH after COVID-19, which were not thoroughly covered in the prior studies. That is, investigating customers' shopping patterns can provide rich information about their behavioral changes after COVID-19, by which firms can design more personalized marketing promotions to better retain their customers.
