This study provides evidence supporting the presence of time-dependent lottery preference in the Korean stock market. The strategy (TMAX strategy) is constructed by the method of buying (short selling) stocks with the most recent maximum daily returns (MAX) ranked in the bottom (top) decile of the historical distribution, based on the time-series distribution of maximum daily returns (MAX) within a month. The TMAX strategy performs similarly to Bali et al.(2011)’s MAX strategy and generates statistically significant excess returns. The result is robust after relaxing the specifications of TMAX or controlling for several firm characteristics that are known to have a significant affect on returns. Like Bali et al.(2011)’s lottery preference anomaly, the result shows that time-dependent lottery preference is also an anomaly that cannot be explained by the classic asset pricing theory.
