This research provides the IPO underperformance exists in the Korean stock market. Specifically, when IPO stocks are classified as companies less than 60 months after list, they show lower risk-adjusted returns than those that do not. This research also found that the main reason of this phenomenon is the idiosyncratic risk puzzle. In other words, the return on a portfolio with high idiosyncratic volatility is significantly lower than that of a portfolio with low idiosyncratic volatility, and that relationship is stronger in IPO stocks, resulting in IPO low performance. However, even in the portfolio with the highest idiosyncratic volatility, the return of IPO stocks is low, so the idiosyncratic volatility puzzle do not fully explain the IPO's low performance. Therefore, additional analysis provides book value ratio (BM) is an additional variable that can explain IPO underperformance.
