As natural language processing and machine learning technologies become more advanced, there is an expectation that insights can be derived using text data. It is obvious that news and stock prices have a correlation, and studies have been conducted to predict stock returns using news articles. In this paper, based on the methodology presented by Ke, Kelly, and Xiu (2019), an empirical study is conducted on Korean stock market. As a result, strategies implemented with positive news have significant returns even after adjusting risks with five factors of Fama and French (2015) and momentum factor. However, unlike the U.S. market, Korean market is very sensitive to negative news, and strategies using it do not make profits. In addition, this study promotes a broader understanding by analyzing news reflection speeds and differences by size, sectors, and trading entities.
뉴스와 주가는 큰 상관관계를 갖는다는 것이 알려져 있고, 이를 활용하여 주가 수익률을 예측하기 위한 연구들은 지속적으로 이뤄져왔다. 본 연구는 Ke, Kelly, and Xiu(2019)의 방법론을 바탕으로 한국시장에서 주가수익률 예측 목적에 커스터마이즈 된 지도학습 기반의 감성사전을 구축하고, 토픽 모델링 방식을 통해 최대 긍정 및 부정 감성을 갖는 뉴스기사의 단어 빈도 벡터 가중치를 계산한다. 벌점화 최대 우도 추정법을 이용하여 기사 수준의 감성점수를 도출하고 이에 근거하여 데일리 포트폴리오를 구성하여 실증 분석한다. 분석 결과 긍정적인 뉴스로 실행한 전략은 Fama and French(2015)의 5가지 요인과 모멘텀 요인으로 위험을 조정한 뒤에도 유의한 수익률을 갖는다. 그러나 미국시장과 달리 한국시장은 부정적인 뉴스에 아주 민감하게 반응하여 이를 활용한 전략은 수익을 내지 못한다. 추가적으로 뉴스의 반영속도, 시가총액 별, 업종 별, 거래주체별 차이 분석을 통해 보다 넓은 이해를 도모한다.
