Social robots are mostly designed to either promote or moderate target behaviors (such as exercise and smoking). However, there has not been much work done on designing social robots that aim to both promote and moderate human behaviors; i.e., proactively encouraging users to engage in behaviors without over-engagement. As a case in which this situation may occur, we choose a solitary drinking context and design a social robot. This robot encourages drinking in an enjoyable fashion as a companion but discourages unmoderated drinking. Our preliminary user study (n=20) reveals that the robot is perceived as a friendly companion, and its human-likeness is partly attributed to the robot’s intervention. Most participants followed the robot’s intervention and perceived the robot as a smart friend due to its interventions and behavior tracking features. We further discuss the design implications for a social robot that provides behavior promotion and moderation.
소셜 로봇은 목표 행동을 증진하거나 또는 중재하기 위한 방식으로 디자인되어 왔다. 하지만 사용자의 행동을 증진시키면서도 그 행동에 과도하게 몰입되지 않도록 중재하는 것을 함께 목표로 하는 소셜 로봇을 디자인하는 연구는 많이 이루어지지 않았다. 이러한 상황이 발생할 수 있는 사례로, 본 연구에서는 단독 음주 상황에 맞는 소셜 로봇을 디자인한다. 이 로봇은 사용자의 음주 행동을 즐겁게 만들어 줌과 함께, 절제되지 않은 음주 행동은 중재한다. 20명을 대상으로 한 사용자 실험 결과 이 로봇은 참가자들에게 친근한 친구와 같이 인식되었으며, 로봇이 제공하는 중재 방식은 사람과 비슷한 것으로 받아들여졌다. 대부분의 참가자들은 로봇의 중재를 따랐으며, 로봇이 제공하는 중재 방식과 행동 트래킹 기능으로 인해 똑똑한 친구와 같이 여겼다. 본 연구에서 찾은 결과를 기반으로 행동 증진 및 중재를 위한 소셜 로봇의 디자인 함의에 대해 논의한다.
