As hydrogen production is being considered as sustainable energy resource, numerous studies have been carried out to develop catalysts to reduce the high overpotential of oxygen evolution reaction. In particular, transition metal chalcogenides have been reported as an efficient OER catalyst with not only low cost and but also high activity. However, underlying mechanism of phase transformation into transition metal(oxy)hydroxides during alkaline oxygen evolution reaction is still remaining unclear. Herein we directly observed the phase transition process with hydrothermally synthesized nickel selenide nanoparticle which is one of the transition metal chalcogenides. Electrochemical performance of nickel selenide was evaluated and compared with commercially synthesized nickel hydroxide to confirm superior intrinsic activity. Initial surface reconstruction and following phase transition steps were investigated with transmission electron microscopy to provide deep understanding of the process.
