Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIB) are the promising candidates for the next-generation energy storage system due to their inherent safety, low cost, abundant resources and eco-friendliness. However, the development of AZIB is currently hindered by the lack of understanding on the charge storage mechanism of AZIB. In fact, there is an ongoing debate on which of the two cations, $H^+$ and $Zn^{2+}$, dominantly works as charge carriers and contributes to the charge storage of AZIB. Here we report that the charge storage mechanism varies depending on electrolyte pH of AZIB with the layer-structured orthorhombic $α-V_2O_5$ cathode and zinc metal anode. The systematical analysis on cathode materials using XRD, XPS, and STEM/EDS showed that the inserted ion into the α-V2O5 changes from $H^+$ to $Zn^{2+}$ when the pH of electrolyte becomes higher from 1.0 to 4.5, and in particular, both of $H^+$ and $Zn^{2+}$ are sequentially inserted into the cathode when the pH is 3.0.
