Many research has been conducted to replace manpower due to the diverse and dynamic motion capabilities of walking robots. In particular, the performance of the actuator greatly influences the performance of the legged robot. Although many legged robots have been made through various types of actuation strategies, this paper describes the design process of the Quasi Direct Drive actuator for a quadrupedal robot. It is designed based on the energy efficient actuator design principles suggested in previous studies and in particular, a detailed process of reducing mechanical impedance is described. The dynamic performance of the actuator through the presented design process is verified with jump experiment of two-degree of freedom one-leg platform and energy efficiency is measured through comparative experiments with other platforms.
