This paper proposes a highly sensitive & stretchable pressure sensor using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gel with charge accumulation characteristics. The space charge generated by electric field is reduced by initial contact force. A highly sensitive pressure sensor was designed using this phenomenon, and the working principle was verified through EIS method. Proposed pressure sensor shows resistance change by 40% at low pressure within 1.5kPa and can measure pressure up to 30.5kPa. In addition, the response time of sensor is 35ms, and possibility of fabricating pressure sensor with high spatial resolution through dense electrode placement is verified. PVC-gel is a highly viscous and soft material. Therefore, 30mm thick PVC-gel reduced impulsive force by 41.87%. A robot safety skin that absorbs shock and detects collision (pressure) was designed using a high sensitivity of proposed pressure sensor and the high shock absorption capacity of PVC-gel. By applying robot safety skin to the gripper, the amount of impulse generated when colliding with a robot moving at speed of 261 mm/s was reduced by 61%.
