This study analyzed 3 months' worth of received obituaries at Chosun Ilbo, and 6 months’ worth of obituaries to find out the obituary publishing system of Korean newspapers and the social class of the deceased and the bereaved families. There is a difference in that short death notice, which has not been studied so far, was targeted for the study.
Obituaries of celebrities or well-known figures focused more on the deceased, while the short death notice focused more on the bereaved families. As for the occupational groups, most obituaries were of corporate representatives and executives, and most of them were of funerals in university hospitals in Seoul and other metropolitan areas. It was found that obituaries tended to first reflect those who shared interests with the newspaper, such as press HR, coverage, and sales.
Korean newspapers publish obituaries every day, but they do not disclose how to receive them. According to an analysis of 3 months' worth of received obituaries at Chosun Ilbo, Yonhap News Agency accounted for 37.5%, in-house personnel requests 35%, and Fax 24.9%. Even though the general public is excluded from the obituaries, but newspapers a structurally limited medium through which the facts of death are received. In a survey of 300 adults nationwide, many answered that they acknowledged the functionality and necessity of obituary, but they did not intend to use it.
The reason why Korean newspapers continue to publish obituaries has been analyzed as the path-dependence theory. It is a phenomenon in which, once a standard or rule is established, one cannot escape it even knowing it is inefficient. It is necessary to change the style of the obituaries, boldly open the page to the reader, and pioneer the area of journalism using obituaries.
본 논문은 한국 신문의 부고 제작 관행과 부고 내용의 사회 계층적 특징, 그리고 부고에 대한 시민의 인식을 알아보기 위해 신문사의 부고 제작 시스템, 국내 한 신문사의 3개월간 부고 접수 경로와 6개월간의 부고 내용을 연구했다. 그간 연구가 이뤄지지 않았던 단신 형태의 부고를 연구 대상으로 삼았다는 점에서 차별성이 있다.
유명인 부고 연구에선 고인 중심의 편향이 드러났지만, 단신 형태의 부고에선 유족 중심의 편향이 나타났다. 직업군으로는 기업체 대표·임원이 가장 많았고, 수도권 대학병원의 장례에 부고가 집중되는 등 사회 계층적 편향이 나타났다. 언론계 인사나 취재, 영업 등 신문사와 이해관계를 가진 인물이 부고에 우선 반영되는 경향도 나타났다.
국내 신문사는 매일 부고를 싣지만 접수 방법은 제대로 공개하지 않고 있다. 조선일보의 3개월치 부고 접수 경로를 분석한 결과에서도 연합뉴스가 37.5%, 사내 인사의 요청이 35%, 구 매체인 팩스가 24.9%를 차지했다. 일반인은 부고에서 배제돼 있음에도 신문사는 이 같은 폐쇄성을 계속 유지한다. 전국 성인 300명 대상 설문 조사에서 부고의 기능성, 필요성은 인정하지만 이용할 의사는 없다는 답변이 많았다.
한국 신문이 부고 제작 관행을 이어가는 이유는 경로의존성(path-dependence) 개념으로 분석을 시도했다. 한 번 규칙이 정해진 이후, 비효율적이라는 사실을 알고도 관성에서 벗어나지 못하는 현상이다. 부고의 양식을 바꾸고 지면을 독자에게 과감히 개방하며, 부고를 활용한 저널리즘 영역을 개척해 나갈 필요가 있다.
