Packed bed membrane reactor and catalytic membrane reactor can be a breakthrough of thermodynamic limitations for thermally limited reaction such as CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. However, it is difficult to manufacture on a large-scale due to degradation of performance by some important problems such as mass transfer limitation and pressure drop. In this present study, the possibility of fabrication of a large-scale methanol production membrane reactor is proposed by manufacturing an integrated support-catalyst that simultaneously serves as a support and catalyst in membrane reactor by using partially solution-processable process. It was confirmed that alumina hollow fiber supports derived from aluminum-based metal-organic framework precursor have macroporous and mesoporous structures that can mitigate the mass transfer limitation and pressure drop even in large-scale. High specific area indicates that it can perform well as a catalyst support for dispersing the catalyst. In addition, it is suggested that the carbon dioxide conversion above the thermodynamic equilibrium limitation of the CO2 hydrogenation can be achieved by using the in-situ water removal membrane reactor through membrane reactor modeling and simulation.
