In this thesis work, we propose an efficient hardware architecture for digital telephone switching on IBM PC/AT compatibles. The proposed switching architecture is very flexible to add special features and value-added services easily and has superior expandability. We implement a small size telephone switching system using the proposed architecture on an IBM PC/AT compatible.
This switching system is composed of two kinds of functional boards. The first one called the "MAIN BOARD" consists of the PCM switching mechanism and various system resources. The second one called the "LINE INTERFACE BOARD" consists of central office(CO) trunk and subscriber interface circuits. One can increase the line capacity by simply adding more LINE INTERFACE BOARDs in empty slots in the IBM PC. Two(2) kinds of ASIC devices which implement a new concept of PCM highway structure and switching mechanism are used in the switching system. This switching system can handle up to 21 trunks and 56 extensions using a 12MHz 80286 IBM PC/AT platform.
