In this thesis work, we implement the group 3 facsimile MODEM algorithms and protocols in real time using a TMS320C31 digital signal processing (DSP) chip.
The MODEM algorithms implemented in this study conform to V.21 and V.29 standard of ITU-T. The building blocks of MODEM algorithms consist of symbol timing recovery, interpolation, phase splitting, adaptive equalization and carrier recovery. We also implement the binary data compression algorithm and the FAX communication protocol according to T.4 and T.30 standards of ITU-T, respectively. Additionally, a simple user interface and tone detection and generation algorithms are implemented.
The MODEM algorithms and FAX communication protocol run on the DSP chip and the data compression algorithm run on the IBM PC. We test all the FAX algorithms implemented in this study in a back-to-back mode and verify the algorithms. Further work is needed for communication tests with commercial FAX machines on GSTN.
