Redox flow battery (RFB) is one of the promising energy storages systems with a grid scale owing to their decoupled energy and power density, which lead to scalability and flexibility in design. However, low energy density is a bottleneck of RFB as a technology for ESS. To aim the high energy density, the redox-active molecules should have high solubility and large voltage gap. Many redox-active organic materials have been studied for the role of catholyte in nonaqueous medium while only a few anolytes have been designed in this system. Herein, we present a new category of indazolium/indazole-based molecule that can be employed as the anolyte. Through the fundamental studies on the design of indazole derivatives and the corresponding electrochemical/chemical analyses, we discovered benzoyl indazole derivative provides high reversibility with low redox potential. After that, carbon electrodes and electrolytes were investigated to find optimal electrochemical conditions which enables stable redox reaction of benzoyl indazole derivative. Finally, galvanostatic cycling test using symmetric H-cell was carried out to assess the electrochemical/chemical reversibility and stability of benzoyl indazole derivative. This study gives the guideline to develop new redox-active organic molecules and optimize the electrochemical conditions for the application of RFBs.
