This study investigates the spinout performance difference depending on industry origin. It is suggested that there can be two possible types of spinouts: horizontal spinout (spinout located in same industry with parent) and vertical spinout (spinout located in difference industry from parent). It is posited that two different types of spinouts will have different performance implication because of different usage of background knowledge and different relationship with parent firm. From the unique dataset, it is found that the vertical spinout will survive longer than horizontal spinout, which implies higher performance of vertical spinout than horizontal spinout. This research contributes to the spinout literature in that it highlights the importance of specifying two different types of spinouts. Also, it offers the evidence that there is different performance implication of spinouts depending on where they are originated from.
이 연구는 스핀아웃의 기원 산업에 따른 성과 차이에 대해 연구한다. 스핀아웃은 부모 기업과 같은 산업에서 사업을 영위하는지, 혹은 다른 산업에서 사업을 영위하는지에 따라 서로 다른 유형의 스핀아웃으로 정의할 수 있다. 이 연구는 서로 다른 유형의 스핀아웃이 배경 지식 활용과 부모 회사와의 상호 관계에서 차이가 있으므로, 상반되는 성과를 보인다고 주장한다. 다양한 소스를 이용해 구성된 데이터를 바탕으로, 본 연구는 부모 기업과 다른 산업에서 사업을 영위하는 스핀아웃이 부모 기업과 같은 산업에서 사업을 영위하는 스핀아웃보다 더 높은 성과를 보인다는 점을 밝힌다. 이 연구는 서로 다른 유형의 스핀아웃을 고려하는 것이 중요함을 밝힘으로써 스핀아웃 연구에 기여한다. 또한, 이 연구는 스핀아웃의 기원 산업에 따른 서로 다른 유형의 스핀아웃이 서로 상반된 성과를 가진다는 단서를 제공한다.
