The conventional ways of product design assessment face challenges in new visualization methods focusing on the earlier stages of product design. We investigated designers' perceptions during product style assessment, while interior styles were varying including lighting conditions. In particular, we explored the potential of VR that provides designers an immersive experience in viewing and judging product styles by placing the product into various interiors. In a preliminary study, we conveyed a formative study to define the style features of the living room interiors. Then, we carried out a user study with two kinds of air purifiers in four interior contexts using VR and derived five findings. Finally, we proposed a framework of a three-layered structure that distinguishes the experiential values of VR for product style assessment from the designer's perspective: perceptual, participatory, and imagination levels. Based on the empirical findings, designers expect to adequately facilitate VR as a tool for an immersive experience in product style assessment.
초기 디자인 과정에 특화된 시각화 방법에 대한 니즈가 제품 디자인 평가 과정에서 새로운 가능성을 모색하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 디자이너가 제품의 스타일을 평가하는 과정에서 조명 환경을 포함하여 제품이 놓여진 인테리어가 다양한 상황에서 제품 조형을 어떻게 인지하는가에 대해 탐색하고자 하였다. 특히, VR을 이용하여 주어진 인테리어 환경이 바뀌는 과정에서 디자이너의 몰입감이 강화된 시각적 경험과 인지적 판단에 주목하였다. 예비 조사에서는 거실 환경의 인테리어 요소들을 추출하였고, 본 조사에서는 각기 다른 네 가지 인테리어 환경에 대하여 두 가지 공기 청정기를 실험 자극물로 구성하였다. VR을 이용한 사용자 조사에서 총 다섯 가지의 주요 발견점들을 도출하였다. 이를 세 단계의 구조로 정리된 프레임워크로 수렴하여 각 단계에 대해 인지적, 참여적, 그리고 상상적 차원으로 설명하였다. 실험 연구에서 도출된 발견점들을 토대로 디자이너들이 몰입감 높은 경험을 제품 스타일을 평가를 위해 VR 를 적절히 활용할 수 있기를 기대한다.
