Although the recently developed AI technology has shown remarkable performance in tasks with clear goals, how AI can aid and interact with a human in cognitive tasks remains underexplored. We developed Idea Squares, an interactive text generation tool for ideation, and conducted an in-depth study composed of series of ideation sessions. Our findings suggest that Idea Squares is capable of supporting designers by 1) inspiring them through newly generated texts, 2) revealing unconsidered design factors, and 3) motivating them to keep on the ideation process. We acknowledge that AI could provide a pleasant surprise to designers in the ideation process and discuss how AI can interact with designers for creative tasks.
최근 인공지능 기술의 발전으로 여러 분야에서 인공지능이 놀라운 성과를 보여주고 있다. 인공지능이 두각을 나타내는 과제는 목표가 명확하다는 공통점이 있다. 하지만 창의적 사고가 필요한 분야에서는 그 활용 방안 연구가 미흡하다. 본 연구에서는 인공지능이 생성한 텍스트로 디자인 아이디에이션 과정을 지원하는 도구인 아이디어 스퀘어즈를 제안하였다. 개발된 시스템은 인공지능이 생성한 디자인 컨셉 텍스트를 통해 아이디어의 영감을 제공한다. 아이디어 스퀘어즈를 아이디에이션 과정에 적용해보는 스터디를 진행한 결과, 아이디어 스퀘어즈가 1) 새로운 아이디어를 제공하고, 2) 미처 생각하지 못한 디자인 요소를 상기시켜주며, 3) 아이디에이션을 계속 할 수 있도록 동기를 부여해준다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 본 발견점에 기반해 창의적 과제에서 인공지능의 활용 방안 및 인간과의 바람직한 상호작용의 방향성에 대하여 논의한다.
