South Korean news organizations have adopted Artificial Intelligence technologies in the hope that the technologies will free reporters from repetitive routine work and enable them to focus on more meaningful tasks such as investigative reporting. However, most of these endeavors have hit a hitch, since the organizations failed to integrate AI technologies with their news production processes. They also failed to conduct adequate “quality control” on their automated news stories and produced low-quality articles. This study examined the case of Yonhap News Agency, South Korea’s largest news wire service, through in-depth interviews of those involved in the agency’s AI projects. Yonhap has made an outstanding example, because it has automated news stories without compromising quality and accuracy. We found that Yonhap has streamlined its news production processes by deploying various AI technologies, and successfully reduced human work intensity. Adopting AI technologies in news organizations is difficult, because many media firms lack experience and related data. Some companies have succumbed to the temptation to merely inflate the quantity of their digital contents with poor-quality automated stories. But we believe that thorough quality control efforts and redesigning of work processes will be the key to overcoming such difficulties.
