This thesis aims to understand the factors underlying the assessment of gender equality among graduate students of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Utilizing the recent survey data collected by the Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI) and the Korea Federation of Women’s Science and Technology Associations (KOFWST), this study investigates the effect of graduate students’ research environment on their assessment of gender equality in the South Korean STEM fields, focusing on the variations by respondents’ sex and laboratory sex composition. Deploying the difference of mean test, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression, this thesis confirms (1) the masculine culture of the South Korean STEM fields, (2) the discrepancies by sex in the perceptions of the graduate research environment and gender equality, and (3) the significance of the non-discrimination experience, interaction with peer colleagues, and financial support for gender equality perception. These results call for policy designs that are developed based on the considerations of the perception of the current status and complexity of gender equality in STEM fields.
과학기술계의 여성과학기술인 처우 개선 및 성평등 함양을 위한 노력이 지속되어 온 가운데, 상대적으로 한국 과학기술계 성평등 현황에 대한 평가는 미흡하게 논의되었다. 본 논문은 이공계열 대학원생들이 인식한 한국 과학기술계의 성평등 현황에 대한 평가에 영향을 끼치는 요인을 파악하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 과학기술정책연구원과 한국여성과학기술단체총연합회에서 온라인 설문을 통해 수집한 데이터를 활용하여, 응답자의 성별, 응답자가 소속된 실험실의 성비, 응답자의 대학원 연구 환경에 대한 평가가 한국 과학기술계 성평등 수준 평가에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 살펴본다. 평균차이 분석, 상관관계 분석, 계층적 회귀분석을 수행하여, 본 논문은 (1) 한국 과학기술계의 남성 중심적 문화, (2) 대학원 연구 환경과 성평등 수준에 대한 성별간의 인식 불일치, (3) 성평등 수준 평가에 미치는 차별적 경험, 동료 상호작용, 재정적 지원의 중요성을 확인하였다. 본 연구 결과는 과학기술계 성평등 정책 수립 과정에서 성평등 본연의 복합적 특성에 대한 고려와 현재 과학기술계 성평등 수준에 대한 면밀한 검토의 필요성을 제시한다.
