This study aimed to develop a laboratory workbench that can lead the laboratory furniture market through aesthetic and functional differentiation. To establish a design strategy, three analytical activities were conducted: market research, trend research, and user research. ‘Flexibility’, ‘Collaboration’, and ‘Identity’ were derived as design keywords. Based on this, the laboratory workbench concept ideation for implementation of design keywords was conducted. By developing ideas through the image association method, the 'Nomad Lab' concept, which mainly features the expansion of worktop space and the mobility of drawers, and the 'Flexi Lab' concept, which features various space composition through the vertical and horizontal layout of the worktop and wide storage space, were developed. Experts from within and outside the manufacturer evaluated the validity of the concepts in four design evaluation criteria: productivity, ease of assembly and maintenance, marketing, and usability. After improving each component based on the evaluation, a final laboratory workbench was proposed with an aesthetic identity expressed in the design language using futuristic materials and a brand logo and the functional characteristics of portable drawers and flexible worktop layouts. A new laboratory workbench developed in this study is expected to improve the laboratory's environment reflecting the changing research culture. Moreover, the design elements and design decision processes of the laboratory workbench discussed during the development may contribute as a reference for the other laboratory furniture design projects.
본 연구는 심미적, 기능적 차별화를 통해 연구실 가구 시장을 선도할 수 있는 실험실 워크벤치 개발을 목표로 하였다. 디자인 전략을 구축하고자 시장 조사, 트렌드 조사, 사용자 조사의 세 가지 해석적 연구를 진행하였으며 디자인 키워드로 유연성, 협업성, 독자성을 도출하였다. 이를 기반으로 디자인 키워드 구현을 위한 실험실 작업대 컨셉 아이디에이션을 진행하였다. 이미지 연결 기법을 통해 아이디어들을 발전시켜 워크탑 공간의 확장과 서랍의 이동성을 주 특징으로 하는 ‘노마드 랩(Nomad Lab)’ 컨셉과 워크탑의 수직, 수평 배치를 통한 다양한 공간 구성과 넓은 수납공간을 특징으로 하는 ‘플렉시 랩(Flexi Lab)’ 컨셉을 개발하였다. 제조사 내부, 외부 자문단 등의 전문가 집단에 의해 생산성, 조립 및 유지관리 용이성, 마케팅, 사용성의 네 가지 디자인 평가 기준에서 컨셉 검증과 평가가 이뤄졌다. 이를 통해 부품별 개선 방향성을 수립하여 최종적으로 미래적인 이미지를 주는 재료 사용과 로고를 활용한 디자인 언어로 심미적 독자성을 표현하고 휴대 가능한 서랍과 워크탑의 단독 활용을 통한 자유로운 배치의 기능적 특징을 지닌 실험실 작업대 컨셉을 제안하였다. 본 연구에서 개발한 실험실 작업대는 변화하는 연구 문화를 반영하여 실험실 환경을 개선할 것이라 기대되며 개발을 진행하며 논의된 실험실 작업대의 디자인 결정 과정과 디자인 요소들은 추후 실험실 가구 디자인 프로젝트들을 위한 참고 자료로써 기여할 수 있음을 시사한다.
