Polydopamine coating, a material-independent coating, inspired from mussel foot adhesion was utilized in all
areas of research including but not limited to energy, nanomaterials, biomaterials, and surface functionalization
for its ability to modify nearly all surfaces. More in-depth reaction chemical pathways have been reported in
recent studies, with growing understanding of polydopamine coating method. Surface modification utilizing
dopamine derivatives such as other phenol compounds containing catechol or gallol groups have risen in
popularity. In this dissertation, the catechol or gallol interfacial interaction chemistry was studied and the
potential application rising from the newly studied chemistry was explored. This included turning polydopamine
coating into material-selective coating from material-independent coating, turning polydopamine particle
formation to flake formation, utilizing insect cuticle chemistry inspired coating to produce protective coating for image analysis, and non-air requiring air/ water interface film formation.
