This paper deals with the technologies necessary to make 3D models of real machines or industrial plant through laser scanning. The first study is an automatic scanning technology necessary for a scanning process suitable for small-scale objects such as mechanical parts. In the existing 3D scanning process, scanning in several directions is required to compensate for occlusion and noise according to the scanner position, the scan data is visually checked, and the next scan position and direction is determined through empirical judgment. The key element technology of automatic scanning for automation of this process is the selection of Next-Best-View. It is to select the next scanning view that can supplement the unscanned area. In this study, the next scanning view improved than the existing method was derived by using the primitive information in a mechanical part that was not covered in the existing research in the graphics field. Using primitive information such as plane, cylindrical surface, spherical surface, conical surface, and torus surface, we propose a Next-Best-View selection method for 3D automatic scanning of machine parts. The second study is a method of reconstructing the CAD model of a plant piping system consisting of pipes connected to fittings. The connection point between pipe and fitting is an important reference point in as-built models. In this study, based on the ICP (Iterative Near Point) algorithm, the fitting model is first registered to the point cloud, and then the connection point between the fittings and the pipe is identified by using the information of the port point existing in the fitting CAD model of the plant CAD system. The purpose of this study is to propose a method of creating an as-built piping system with more accurate connection points than the existing method by adjusting the incorrect end points and directions of pipes recognized from the point cloud using the identified connection point. Both of these studies are automation technologies required for the process of creating 3D CAD models of real objects using laser scanning technology.
