In this dissertation, the robustness of the air route segment network in rapidly growing Northeast Asian region is assessed based on the node criticality. The air transport network is modeled and constructed as a network of air route segment, which is the minimum unit in flight planning. Three variations of air route segment networks – unweighted, distance-weighted, and demand-weighted networks are considered with node failure analysis and volcanic ash dispersal scenarios. Regional and national networks are neither categorized as small-world nor scale-free. Although its network properties, the network is more vulnerable to targeted attacks than random failure, with a set of critical nodes identified as ‘pseudo-hubs’. When the loss in flight operation is measured in the corrupted network by node failures as well as volcanic ash clouds, rerouting improved flight operability significantly. Findings on the set of critical nodes provide key insights for the vulnerability of the network, especially in the context of regional coordination against various natural and manmade risks.
